Practise how to perform successfully at an Assessment Centre

Assessment centres are now an integral part of the recruitment process for a lot of law firms, and not just the larger ones.

Come along and experience a group exercise for yourself at our Assessment Centre training session on Thursday 20 March 2014 from 1pm to 3pm in the Careers and Employability Seminar Room.

The session, which is being facilitated by me in conjunction with Baker Tilly, Chartered Accountants, will also provide you with useful general hints and tips for applications and interviews. You don’t have to be interested in Accountancy to participate!

Please sign up at http://chester.prospects.ac.uk/index.html If you haven’t done so already, you will need to register first.  Otherwise, you can email me directly at p.hardie@chester.ac.uk and I’ll add you to the list.

Law students visit Lincoln's Inn for talks

On Wednesday 19 February 10 Law students from the University of Chester Law School attended an Information Afternoon and Evening at Lincoln's Inn in London, accompanied by Philippa Hardie, Specialist Law Career Consultant.

There were a series of talks in the afternoon, given by practising barristers from both the employed and the self-employed bar.  These were all very informative and, as well as detailing the highlights of a career as a barrister, were also designed to tell students of the difficulties they might encounter along the way.

In the evening the students attended a formal dinner in the Great Hall, and were joined by Members of the Inn, including barristers and judges.

Law Society Diversity Access Scheme now open for applications

Applications for the Law Society Diversity Access Scheme, which offers financial assistance for the Legal Practice Course, are now open.  The application form, full information about the criteria for the scheme, process and timetable can be found on the Junior Lawyers Division website.

The Diversity Access Scheme (DAS) offers assistance with Legal Practice Course (LPC) fees to exceptional individuals who face or have overcome exceptional obstacles to qualify as a solicitor. Obstacles may be of a financial, social, educational or personal nature, or might relate to a disability or chronic health condition that makes the goal of qualifying as a solicitor a particularly challenging one.

The scheme also provides successful applicants with work experience and mentoring opportunities. Information about those previously helped by the scheme, including a short video, can be found on the Diversity Access Scheme page.

Closing date is Friday 28 March 2014.

Interested in an alternative route to qualification as a solicitor?

CILEX stands for the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives and offers an alternative route to becoming a solicitor without doing the LPC.  You gain exemptions from your Law degree to some of the CILEX exams.

Legal Executives can now become partners in Law firms and carry out the same role as a solicitor.

Find out more about the Graduate Fast-track Diploma

The Graduate Fast-track Diploma (GFTD) is designed for those that have recently gained a qualifying law degree or GDL. It's a shorter qualification route to fulfilling your career ambitions by becoming a Chartered Legal Executive lawyer.
If you have graduated with a qualifying law degree you can take the GFTD to complete the academic part of your legal qualification. You just need to study two units from the range of Level 6 Practice subjects (one of which must relate to the subjects you studied within your law degree), and the Level 6 Client Care Skills unit to complete your academic studies.
